What we do

The Service for External Affairs

…supports the members of the Government Council in fulfilling their representational tasks in conferences and bodies not within the competence of a single Department

Amongst other things, this includes the preparation of meeting documents of

  • the Conference of Cantonal Governments (CCG)
  • the Zurich Metropolitan Conference
  • regional government conferences
  • the International Lake Constance Conference (IBK)
  • the Assembly of European Regions (AER)

… manages external affairs not within the competence of a single Department …

Amongst other things, this includes

  • The mandate as the cantonal service for the EU's regional programmes to stimulate cross-border cooperation (Interreg) that the canton participates in.
  • regular information of Zurich's federal parliamentarians on the position of the Canton of Zurich regarding topics of the preliminary consultation committees (in addition to or in coordination with the information duties of the Departments),
  • the responsibility for answering parliamentary projects in the area of external affairs with cross-departmental topics

… supports the members of the Government Council in their representational duties…

  • in particular regarding the preparation of receptions for foreign ambassadors and delegations (in cooperation with the Event and Representation Service of the Chancellery)

…coordinates the external affairs of the Departments and the Chancellery…

Amongst other things, this includes

  • the support of information exchange between Departments in the area of external affairs
  • the management of the coordination body for external affairs (CEA) by the head of the coordination center. The CEA is comprised of at least one representative of each Department and sees to the coordination of European and cross-border questions.

… supports the Government Council in the field of controlling and the further developing external affairs.

  • by observing the developments in the European and cross-border area as well as questions of federalism
  • the assessment of developments from the point of view of the Canton of Zurich
  • proposals and initiation of new projects, alliances as well as strategic focal points.
